It has been longer than a week that I\u2019ve been scratching my head over, ok right, reading and reflecting over why we turn to jewelry, precious stones, especially diamond to express our affection and most intimate feelings. Why do we love them? I have gone through Freudian psychoanalysis, researches and more \u2013 long story short, lots of reading and reflection. Result \u2013 lots of doubts, lots of belief system, but nothing for sure. Good part of it – we are free to build our own take. So, I am building this article on what makes sense to me. I\u2019d love to hear your opinion and open up discussion about it.<\/p>\n

I see some connection between love of jewelry and mythologically speaking \u201csearch of soul\u201d. Please bear with me! I\u2019ll develop my though processes step by step. It will be fun!<\/p>\n

Throughout the history we have been decorating our bodies with jewelry \u2013 the most primitive ones being bones or other parts of animals our ancestors killed. In retrospect, it is easy to see that the early jewelry was not for decoration, rather affirmation of \u201ccommitments\u201d or \u201clife journey\u201d of the tribal members.<\/p>\n

Keyword: Petrification<\/h4>\n

So jewelry was born as something more than means of decoration. Its role was to kind of \u201cfreeze in time\u201d the life journey of the bearer of that primal jewelry. This thought makes me remember two things \u2013 how the ephemerality of life made philosophers wrestle for ages with the question of death and meaning of life and \u201cpetrification\u201d an important word in mythology which means \u201chardening into stone\u201d. (the Root coming from pietra\/piedra \u2013 stone). And this reminds me of monuments \u2013 when we want to make something or someone to be remembered eternally, we build a monument \u2013 we eternalize or immortalize it.<\/p>\n
